Researchers have carried out a new comprehensive assessment on how different people around the world understand the concept of 'democracy'. The results, published by the leading journal Science, demonstrate that -overwhelmingly- people in diverse countries agree that two factors are the most important for democratic societies: competitive elections and strong protections for civil liberties.
